Mariya

Nyirabarangana, Mariya

  • Born: 1957 (~51)
  • Country: Refugee from DR Congo
  • Lives at Kyangwali Refugee Settlement, Uganda

Mariya cares for her baby granddaughter.

If given a loan, Mariya would buy three goats, two adults and one kid. She would also use part of the loan to improve her garden.

Mariya states "I apply for a loan so I can also have a good life. I enjoy the company of the group (i.e. Kyangwali microcredit group), women who love and I love them to. I am sure I will be able to pay back the loan and earn a profit so I can better care for my family."

In 1994, during the genocide and war in Rwanda, Mariya's husband and all but one son were murdered. She witnessed the torture and deaths of her children. She and her son Serubanza managed to escape. Serubanza eventually married; his wife died, leaving a baby girl. Mariya struggles to care for her baby granddaughter. She says "This is the only orphan I take care of."

"I thank you very much. I kindly wait to hear from you."
