Nkiriyehe, Marina*

  • Born: 1949 (~60)
  • Cares for: 4 children
  • Country: Refugee from Rwanda
  • Lives at Kyangwali Refugee Settlement, Uganda

Marina's husband died in 2005 of malaria. Marina has four children, currently all are attending school.

Marina requests a loan so she can buy sorghum and maize to make a local beer* which people buy in the market every Sunday. She says "it is hot this way and by making 2 jeri cans to sell I can get 6,000sh - 8000sh after selling every Sunday. A loan of 50,000 is only to buy sorghum and maize, I can fetch water which is free. With another 50,000sh I can buy one goat because it saves money and produces quickly".

*The following is Benson's explanation of the local definition of beer. "This is the locally made beer, a mixture of sorghum and maize. It is not alcohol and cannot make someone drunk. It is a soft drink for Christians in the camp, Rwanda, western Uganda and eastern Congo. Those who take alcohol don't like it because it will not make them drunk. It is known as "Bushera." We take it when we are digging (farming) in Coburwas. Odette also makes it when she and I are going to dig."
