Mapendo, Christine

  • Born: 1984 (~25)
  • Cares for: 5 children
  • Country: Refugee from DR Congo
  • Lives at Kyangwali Refugee Settlement, Uganda

I am called Mapendo Christine, 25 years old, living in Kagoma village, block 9 plot number 2. I'm a Congolese by nationality. I am married and have two children and one orphan. On top of that, the last few days (02-09) I received two orphans from DRC. These orphans came with the thousands of refugees currently in the camp.

I ran from DRC in 2001 and in the same year I arrived in Kyangwali. In the DR Congo, thousands and millions of people were killed innocently, many children were left orphans, women became widows and other families were killed completely.

Rebels caught my father and his brother. The rebels put them in a house and locked them inside. The rebels burned the house and my father and his brother. Only bones remained.

When we heard about my father we had to run to Uganda without anything and life became hard for us in Kyangwali. It was later in 2004 that I got married to JP who is also an orphan like me. We comforted one another and fight hard whenever there would be problems and challenges.

As life was going on, we saw it was very important if JP went back to school as the best way to achieve a better life in the future. As he left to go school I faced the following challenges:

  • Robbers came to break the window of the house
  • Children got sick
  • I got serious diseases such as heart beat and pressure which made me weaker even reaching were I failed to work for the children.

I humbly request a microcredit loan equivalent to 120,000sh.

The loan will be used in agricultural business. I will dig two gardens of 40m by 40m (1600m squared). After one year I will be in position to pay back the loan. The remaining money plus income from maize will allow me to continue with business.

What could be the achievement?
  • Through this exercise I will be able to get skills in farming.
  • I will know how to trade what I produce.
  • My children and the orphans I care for will be able to have the following
    • Food
    • Clothing
    • Medication and others
    • I will also be able to help the poor neighbors with the above basic needs.
Environment
  • The bean grasses will add more fertility in the soil. It can help in mulching. This means covering of soil surface to allow water to stay in the soil.
  • The above mentioned allows us to get good yields in the next season. This business will be in terms of sustainable development in the community.

I thank you for the kind help you offer to people in Kyangwali. Keep it up and may God bless MC project and its servants – Jeanne, George, Benson, Antoinette and all Donors.

MC beneficiary, Mapendo Christine.
