Edited email(s):

Email 1: I am hereby humbly submitting my letter to you for the purpose of sending my greetings to you. How are you there in the USA? Greetings to your family. I am a 16 year old female Congolese, a refuge from Kyangwali having and living with 87 year old parents. My uncle was kidnapped and killed recently in a war outbreak in Congo Rutchuru and my education stopped. I wish to continue with your help if possible, please. I look for a friend to listen to my problems. I am wishing a safe life to you and your family and a safe plan for me.

Thanks. Yours in problems, Anita

Email 2: Dear mum,

It is quite good to hear from you. Warm greetings to you again, plus your family and also your daughters. How are you all there? Here are the answers, a bit of my expressions, to your questions. I completed P7 two times, in 2002 and 2003, but didn't start second grade due to lack of support. Now I am staying home idle. I only have one older brother, Jimmy Pierre Kanizius, who has been in S2. But now his education has been fractured by the death of our uncle, who has been supporting him. My parents, without deceiving, in truth are 87 years old. They can't manage to move, only sitting and sleeping in one place, urinating, defecating. My two sisters, who are divorced and separated from their husbands, do the work of lifting them to the toilet while I prepare food for them. Please, please, I only sleep, sit and think of our life. I find we are nowhere. Our uncle was still in the Congo and we have lived in Kyangwali for about 13 years. Please, we wish we could continue with our education with your care. I am crying to you patiently for help. Have a safe life and your family also and a safe plan for me. My picture is on the way.

Thanks. Yours, Anita

Email 3: Dearest Mom,

Kyangwali is not okay, hunger wants to kill us due to drought and too much sunshine. I am doing the work of digging (farming) now and am no longer at school.

Please, my Mother forces me to get married! * Please assist me, connect me to someone you know. I hope to hear from you.

Yours in drought, Anita

* Note: Because Anita's mother cannot afford to pay the required school fees she is pressuring Anita to marry.

Email 4:

(Note - I was concerned about Anita being forced to marry and wrote her an email asking how she was, this is her reply.)

Mom,

My mother is uneducated; she cannot affort tp pay my school fee. She sees marriage as the only way of life for me since she can't manage to get fees for my education. My mother can feel happy to hear from me that I have an education sponsor.

The crops all died because the season had drought, sunshine was too much. There is much hunger here in Kyangwali.

Jimmy is sending hello to you. However I would like to beg and confirm from you about my going to school?

Hope to hear from you. Your daughter, Anita
