I am a Congolese refugee residing in the Kyangwali refugee settlement in Uganda. I was born in 1991 in a place called Rutshuru. I ran from my homeland in 1998 due to political instabilities there. The distance from our home in the Congo to the refugee camp is very far, we traveled for 1 week traveling by way of the Lorry.
I am born in a family of 11 people (parents, 3 sisters, 6 brothers, and myself). The biggest problem we have because of a large family is education. My parents are now old and they can't afford paying our school fees. Right now I do not know if I can take my school exams because I am out of school because I haven't paid the school fees.
My family gets food from what our father digs (farms) and hunting wild animals. We do not get a balanced diet which leads to bad health. Clothes are got by selling a part of the dug food.
The only jobs for people in the refugee camp is to dig for others. A person can dig for 8 hours and get paid 1500 Uganda shillings, which is relatively 1.5 US dollar.
I spend my days at school revising my books and when I'm in the village I always farm for my parents.
I would be grateful to hear from you soon. Thanks.
Yours, John
