I am a female Congolese refugee staying in Uganda. I was born on February 16th, 1995. We came to the Kyangwali Refugee Settlement when I was 5 years old. I stay with my Aunt, we dig to get food. I'm in primary seven and I am always the best in our class. I am worried I may not join secondary school due to poor living standards in the refugee camp. I have never taken a photo since I was born (Note: I had asked her to send me a picture, Daniel later had Phoebe's picture taken to send me. Jeanne).
Currently I am studying my school notes. If I can go to school again I want to score Distinction in my final exams and that is why I must work hard. I want to receive an education so that I can save and fight for female and children's rights.
Sincerely, Phoebe

Phoebe is a Congolese refugee; living in the Kyangwali camp. She lives with her Aunt. She is a member of COBURWAS Club and that is how I know her. Last year she approached me after a club meeting and asked me for advice. She told me her life story from when she was born to her present situation. The story was bad and brought sadness, she even cried tears. I was so touched and confused. I could only comfort her since I had no solution to her problems. I told her that the main solution for her problems was to get education. She had left the school when she was in primary six because she could not afford to buy exercise books and the school uniform. I went to talk to her Aunt to see how she could at least go back to school and complete primary level. Primary school is free except you must provide yourself with scholastic materials and a school uniform. I suggested the Aunt look for a place to dig (farm) for someone to earn a little money to buy books and a uniform. I assisted them in this work and in three days we completed the work. The work was so tiresome that I even felt sick. We then took Phoebe to school, she is currently in primary seven, and will sit for her final exams in September 2007. What makes me happy is that from primary six she is always the best in their class. Last term she was the best out of more than 110 pupils. Teachers are proud of her; this makes her popular in her school and even in the camp. At times she loses hope and fears that even though she is excelling she will never continue her education. I normally comfort her by showing how God is merciful and has great grace for His people and that God has good plans for His people as in Jeremiah 11:29. I tell her where I have advanced it is not by myself only but by the grace of God. I could not have imagined that I would get someone to sponsor my education - PRAISE BE TO GOD! I will always bless his name for what God is doing for me. Phoebe is now having courage that God will open a way for her and continue her education. Her goal is to become a doctor in future.
God bless you. Much love, Daniel
